Well, it started out perfectly...a nice, strong cold front heading southeast. Missouri, Minnesota, Nebraska, all hit hard by the storm. You could see it streaming in on the satellite imagery...so perfect, just perfect for a huge snowstorm. Meteorologists out of Atlanta showing us future precipitation as only 1/2" at most, and Danny and I telling them they didn't know what they were talking about. I stayed up Saturday on the weather forum blogging with other geeks that love weather. Around 11 p.m. I noticed something I didn't like....a swath of dry air being entrenched into the storm. That I knew was a killer...just like dry air in hurricanes....bye, bye. Well, I went ahead and mentioned it, but everyone ignored it, the snow maps were coming out and I was in the 8-10"+ slot, then it was 4-8"+ slot, which is where I stayed. It started pouring down around 2 a.m., which is about the time I went to bed, but then they said it's what was supposed to happen, that the cold air that the front was bringing would supply enough cold air to start dropping temps. By 10 a.m. Sunday morning it was still coming down heavy. I went onto the weather forum again when Danny left to put a new fuel pump on the Bronco and didn't like what I saw at all. We were stuck in the dry slot causing us to get all rain. Atlanta was getting Thundersnow as was Athens and places to our north, south, east, and west. It stopped raining at 3 and temps started going down. Great, I thought, temps going down, wind was starting to pick up, the radar was looking like the snow was on its way, and then NOTHING! Not even a flake. Such a huge letdown for all of us. I was ticked off, Danny was mad, the kids were upset, all but Patrick, who had told me for over 24 hours that we weren't going to get anything. Just shows you that one tiny little dry spot can rob you of any snow!
So this morning when I was taking Amber to work, we stopped to get gas, saw cars coming from NC with snow all over them and we got the shock of our lives.....the temp was really low.
Yes, you're reading that right....-196 degrees at 7:37 am. Amber got a kick out of it, took a video and a picture of it.
